Introduction to Waklert

Updated: Aug 26, 2022

There's no doubt that nootropics are becoming more and more popular. Every day, it seems like there's a new story about someone who's using them to boost their cognitive performance.

One of these popular nootropics is Waklert which continues to grow in popularity, which begs the question of what exactly is it and how does it compare to all the other nootropics out there.

How does it work? Who takes Waklert? Why is it generally being sold for more expensive than other similar products? Who makes it?

Well, if you're asking yourself these types of questions, or you generally have a broad interest in understanding more about Waklert, then you've come to the right place.

In this blog post we'll cover all the information and facts that we think you need to know when it comes to one of the industry favourites - Waklert.

Introduction to Waklert - taking a white tablet.

Understanding the background of Waklert

All the names in the nootropics space tend to get thrown around interchangeably as if they're all the same products that do the same thing. This is not necessarily the case. Some are similar, but some products are remarkably different, and it is worthwhile understanding their differences prior to placing an order and taking any medication to ensure that you know exactly what you're taking and what is best for you.

When it comes to Waklert - it's a generic version of Armodafinil. But what exactly does this mean? We'll get into that now.

To understand the origins of Armodafinil, you first need to know when Modafinil came about.

Firstly, how it works in the pharmaceutical industry is that when a new medication is discovered, it gets patented by the pharmaceutical company. This will provide them with exclusive manufacturing rights for a certain period of time: generally 20 years. This company will then sell the branded version of the medication, which in the case of Modafinil was the french family-owned French drug company Lafon Pharmaceuticals. They had chosen to call it Modiodal.

Modafinil was sold over the counter under the different brand name Provigil in the United States by the American biopharmaceutical company Cephalon Pharmaceuticals. They had leased the manufacturing rights from Lafon Laboratories, but in 2001 they made the move to acquire the whole Lafon Pharmaceuticals company, giving Cephalon the sole manufacturing rights.

Cephalon were able to maintain their monopoly over Modafinil right up until 2012 through a combination of patent protection and litigation legal cases following the expiry of the patent in 2001.

Introduction to Waklert - FDA approval

Armodafinil came onto the scheme in June 2007 once it was approved by the FDA for the treatment of excessive sleepiness. It was first produced by Cephalon under the brand name Nuvigil up until 2016 when the FDA granted Mylan N.V., a global generic and specialty pharmaceuticals company, the rights to manufacture and sell to the United States market the first generic version of Nuvigil.

Since then, there have been a number of other pharmaceutical companies that have joined the ranks in producing their own generic versions of Armodafinil, including Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Limited with their version called Waklert, which can be found in pharmacies all around the world.

Now that was a long explanation for what is a pretty simple concept! But hopefully it makes more sense to you now.

To summarise -

Active ingredient: Armodafinil

Brand name: Nuvigil

Generic [Brand] names: Waklert, Artvigil, Acronite, Armoda, Armod, Neoresotyl, R-Modawake, Modavital, Nodement

Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Limited

We mentioned Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Limited (Sun Pharma), but who exactly are they and do they warrant our trust? After all, we are putting our health into their hands.

So Sun Pharma are arguably the largest manufacturer of generic versions of Modafinil and Armodafinil. Their most popular Smart Drug products are Modalert with the active ingredient Modafinil and Waklert with the active ingredient Armodafinil. Modalert and Waklert have been the go-to products to start your nootropic experience for a long time, and all for good reason.

Sun Pharma is one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the world. The company is headquartered in Mumbai, India and has over 30,000+ employees. Sun Pharma manufactures and markets a wide range of generic and branded drugs. The company's products are available in over 100 countries.

Sun Pharma was founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi. The company went public in 1994 and was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. In 1999, Sun Pharma acquired Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, a U.S.-based generic pharmaceutical company. In 2012, Sun Pharma acquired Ranbaxy Laboratories, another large Indian pharmaceutical company.

Today, Sun Pharma is one of the leading generic drug companies in the world. The company has a strong presence in India and the United States. Sun Pharma has a long history of success in the generics industry and remain committed to providing affordable, high-quality medicines.

From being India's largest pharmaceutical company to becoming the fifth largest specialty generic company in the world, Sun Pharma has come a long way.

But why are their products so popular around the world, especially for Modalert and Waklert?

Well, all medications manufactured by Sun Pharma are delivered according to the very high manufacturing standards and quality controls imposed by industry governing agents such as the FDA in the USA.

Sun Pharma are highly regulated so consumers can be confident in the products that they sell. The price of Sun Pharma products are sometimes higher than that of other generic brands because people trust them more, and are therefore willing to pay that little bit extra for the peace of mind.

What is Armodafinil?

Like Modafinil, Armodafinil (sold under the brand name Nuvigil) also continues to grow in popularity every year as more and more people turn to Smart Drugs and Nootropics to optimise their daily performance.

Armodafinil is generally a drug prescribed to improve wakefulness in people with sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), and shift work disorder (SWD).

Although Armodafinil has been used off-label for quite some time, it is also becoming increasingly utilised for it's cognitive enhancing effects, which include enhanced working memory, executive function, and decision-making capacity. It has also been shown to enhance mood and reaction times.

This is largely why it is being used by more and more by students and professionals around the world to assist them in staying on top of their workloads and excelling at whatever they're doing.

How does Armodafinil work?

The exact mechanism by which Modafinil and Armodafinil work is still not completely understood. Despite decades of research conducted on these drugs, it remains a mystery on how it effectively treats conditions such as narcolepsy and sleeping disorders.

Don't let that discourage you however, what research has been able to conclude is that they're both effective.

There is ongoing research still underway to try and get to the bottom of this mystery, hopefully one day we'll find out. The good news is that we don't have to wait until then before we can experience the benefits that Modafinil and Armodafinil have to offer.

You might be asking yourself - what is the difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil? - and it's a good question. Let's tackle that here.

Enantiomers are molecules that are mirror images of each other—think left-hand and right-hand.

Modafinil is a racemate with the two enantiomers; R-enantiomer and S-enantiomer. Whereas, Armodafinil targets just the R-enantiomer.

Armodafinil is the newer drug when compared to Modafinil. Due to the slightly different chemical makeup of Armodafinil, it has a longer half-life than what Modafinil has, and it is also thought to be more effective at being used as a wakefulness promoting drug, which is why some people prefer it to Modafinil.

Like Modafinil, the pharmacological profile of Armodafinil is notably different from the traditional psychostimulants, such as amphetamines, cocaine or methylphenidate.

Research indicates that Armodafinil and Modafinil elevate the dopamine levels in the hypothalamus. It is thought to do this by acting as a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor. Interestingly, it is understood that Modafinil/Armodafinil binds to the same site on the Dopamine Transporter (DAT) as cocaine, but in a different way. Hence why they don't share the same addictive qualities.

What does Armodafinil treat?

Armodafinil is generally prescribed to treat issues surrounding sleep, arousal and wakefulness.

Some of the conditions treated with Armodafinil include the following:

The benefits of Armodafinil

Armodafinil has a number of advantages, which has made it one of the most popular nootropics regularly taken by people all around the globe.

The following list contains some of the advantages reported for taking Armodafinil:

  • Improved alertness and wakefulness

  • Improved cognitive function

  • Improved ability to concentrate and focus

  • Reduced fatigue; and

  • Improved mood.

Other than the reported advantages listed above (which are the same as for Modafinil), since Armodafinil has a longer half-life than Modafinil, with research indicating that it may be more effective at improving wakefulness in patients with excessive daytime sleepiness, some users prefer it over Modafinil.

Side effects of taking Armodafinil

No medication or drug is ever perfect. Even NZT in the movie Limitless with Bradley Cooper had negative side effects which he only discovered later on since it was very much still an experimental drug. There are always going to be downsides, but ideally you need to find products that have more positives than they do have negatives. Otherwise, what's the point.

Despite Armodafinil not being completely understood, it has been somewhat researched and consumed by the public long enough for us to have a pretty good idea of all the different symptoms and side effects that you might experience while taking it.

If you head over to the webmd page for Armodafinil it might give you a fright, although looking at any medication on webmd (or any page for that matter...) will cause a shock. Their list mostly contains "infrequent" and "rare" side effects. These are useful to know but the chances that you experience any of them is very slim, especially if you follow our advice and take it slow while listening to your body and consulting the required health professionals.

Let me bring your attention to the more common side effects, which affect less than 15% of users:

While these side effects are not very appealing, they don't happen to everyone (less than 15%) and some of these can also be avoided by better understanding the medication, as well as your own body and tolerances. We'll continue to prepare some posts to cover all that is know about Armodafinil and how to minimise the side effects so that users are able to get the most out of their experiences.

Although it can be incorrectly mentioned online, Armodafinil has been found to not be addictive.

Research has also generally concluded that the likelihood of abuse is very low with zero reported Modafinil/Armodafinil caused fatalities. There is an interesting medical article written on the attempted suicide of a teenage who took 5000 mg of Modafinil (~25 tablets which is 25x the recommended average dose of 200 mg), however, lived to tell the tale...

"Approximately 2 hours following ingestion the patient complained of headache, nausea and abdominal pain. /.../ There was no deterioration of kidney or liver functions, and no change in complete blood count or blood pressure."

Not a bad outcome all things considered.

Do people buy Armodafinil online?

It is becoming increasingly popular for people to want to buy their medicine online. The growth of this trend has only been accelerating. People already buy most of what they need need online, so it was only a matter of time until the pharmaceutical industry started to also head in the same direction.

Pricing is a lot cheaper when you're purchasing online, especially for generic medication since there is more competition. Brand named products are still expensive, but you'll still be paying less than if you were to walk into a physical store.

The purchase of Armodafinil and Modafinil online has followed the same trend. More and more people are looking online to try and find ways that they can better perform at school, in their jobs, or just in life in general. The benefits of trying a smart drug like Modafinil seem all too irresistible, but who can blame us, life is all about trying to be our optimal selves.

The increased competition between online Smart Drug vendors has only meant one thing - lower prices. I would have liked to add 'better service', but from what we've seen over the years it hasn't been the case... The industry is a mix of reliable vendors but also plenty of scammers looking for trusting buyers. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between the two, especially with fake or misleading reviews being plastered all over the internet.

We've started writing our own vendor reviews to try and help people to avoid getting scammed or misled.

So this brings us to the question of whether or not it is legal for people to be purchasing their Modafinil and Armodafinil products online. Let's dig into this in some more detail.

Is buying Armodafinil online legal?

The answer to this question is a combination of 'yes' and 'no'. It just depends, but let's dig into why this is the case.

Long story short, it will depend on which country you live in and whether a prescription is required for Armodafinil. Armodafinil has been around for decades now with approval to be sold in the US, throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Each country has classified Modafinil differently, which is generally the case for all pharmaceutical products. It's a complicated space to say the least - and it's no different for nootropics or smart drugs.

There isn't a universal standard that all countries follow, so in order to know whether buying Armodafinil online is legal or not, I'd recommend that you keep reading on to our next section of this blog, that looks at the legality of Modafinil/Armodafinil by country.

Where to buy Armodafinil

While Armodafinil can be purchased from your local pharmacy with a valid prescription, it can also be purchased online easily enough without a prescription.

That being said, it isn't obvious to know where to purchase from and which vendor you can trust. This is why we've prepared some detailed vendor reviews to help you find a supplier that best suits your needs based on how much you're looking to spend and what country you live in.
