Buying Modafinil in Europe in 2023
Updated: Dec 22, 2022
Modafinil is becoming increasingly popular in Europe. In fact, it is one of the most popular nootropics on the continent.
Modafinil is a medication that is typically used to treat individuals who suffer from narcolepsy or sleep apnea. In recent years, however, the drug has become increasingly popular as a cognitive enhancer, with people using it to help improve their focus, concentration, and memory.
It is especially popular among students and working professionals who need to be at the top of their game.
If you live in Europe and would like to learn more about how to buy Modafinil, then you've found the perfect blog post.
For the readers that just want to see our list of reputable vendors, use the links provided below to see our preferred sellers and the current discounts that they're offering.
Stick with us if you would like to learn more about the legality of Modafinil, getting a prescription, where to buy Modafinil if you live in Europe, as well as a detailed overview covering everything important about Modafinil.
This is going to get detailed, so grab yourself a coffee, and let's begin!
Is Modafinil legal in Europe?
Long story short - you will need to have a prescription...
This is especially the case if you live in a country that is part of the European Union (EU). The reason being is that all countries within the EU are guided on what regulations they should and shouldn't have, with the intention of making them more uniform across the whole continent.
As a result, when it comes to the rules surrounding pharmaceuticals, all the EU countries have put into action the recommendations given down to them by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
The EMA determined that Modafinil can only be supplied and sold by pharmacies after a prescription is obtained by the doctor. As a result, this is the requirement for anyone living within the EU.
In EU /.../ [M]odafinil is subject to restricted medical prescription reserved for use in certain specialized area” of the Article 71 of the Directive 2001/83:
“Treatment should be initiated by or under the supervision of a physician with appropriate knowledge of the indicated disorders.”
Interestingly, this same 'Summary of scientific discussion' paper also outlined the following:
"[M]odafinil is neither on the International Narcotics Control Board’s (INCB) list of narcotic substances nor on the list of psychotropic substances. In the national regulation on narcotics (“Forskrift om narkotika m.v., Narkotikalisten”) [M]odafinil is not listed as a narcotic substance.
The conclusion of this discussion piece is calling for the reclassification of Modafinil from prescription group A to B. In our opinion this is a step in the right direction, but still too limited. Considering the low chance of adverse effects and non-addictive properties of Modafinil, we believe that Modafinil should be more readily available. If anything, it should be sold over the counter, just like it already is being done in a number of other countries.
These regulations take time to change, but it is reassuring to know that they're starting to at least head in the right direction when it comes to Modafinil. A prescription is still required, but this may change in the future. We just don't know when.
If you don't have a prescription but you're still eager to get your hands on some Modafinil then you're better off ordering generic Modafinil on the internet from a reliable seller. You can read our vendor reviews to see which of our recommended sellers would best suit your situation.
These online vendors are commonly located in countries like India, where a prescription is not required. As a result, customers in Europe can order the medication without being asked to provide proof of prescription.
Another positive, which originates from Modafinil's non-addictiveness and overall positive off-label use, is that it is unheard of for anyone in Europe to get into legal trouble from ordering Modafinil online just for their own personal use.
What all this means is that it's very likely that you wont have any issues receiving your shipments quickly and safely into Europe.
How to get a prescription for Modafinil in Europe
If you want Modafinil in Europe and you are prepared to do everything by the books then you're going to need to get a prescription.
The first step would be to talk to your local doctor. They can help determine whether a prescription is right for you and, if so, what type of medication would be most effective. To properly diagnose a sleeping condition, the doctors will usually require that you complete a sleep study.
A sleep study usually consists of two parts: the diagnostic phase and the treatment phase. The diagnostic phase is used to determine if you have a sleep disorder and to find out what kind of sleep disorder you have. The treatment phase is used to treat your sleep disorder.
During the diagnostic phase, you will spend one or more nights in a sleep laboratory. You will be connected to machines that will monitor your brain waves, heart rate, breathing, and muscle activity. You may also be asked to wear a device on your finger that measures the oxygen level in your blood.
During the treatment phase, you may be treated with medication, oxygen, or other treatments. You may also be asked to change your sleep habits. For example, you may be told to avoid caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. You may also be asked to keep a sleep diary.
Even once you've gone through a sleep study, there is definitely no guarantee that they'll prescribe you any medication, let alone Modafinil. The sleep studies can sometimes be costly and take a while.
The far easier option is still to order your Modafinil from an online seller without a prescription and have it shipped to you directly. Let's explore this option in a little bit more for your now.

What you need to know about Modafinil
Modafinil (sold under the brand name Provigil) has only continued to increase in popularity over the years, so much so that it has become one of the most known and widely consumed Smart Drugs out there.
Everyone that has done even the most basic research into Smart Drugs would have come across Modafinil and how it is being widely used recreationally by people looking to take advantage of its wakefulness effects and cognitive enhancing properties.
As a result, it is important for people to properly understand what exactly Modafinil is, and how it fits into the world of nootropics. Not all medications are the same, and not all medications are for everyone, but the more you know about any medication, the more likely you are to find what works best for you.
We've prepared a detailed blog post covering everything you need to know about Modafinil already, but continue reading to see some of the main points summarised for you.
What does Modafinil do?
Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant and wakefulness-promoting medication.
It has been approved for the treatment of conditions such as narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness in people with obstructive sleep apnea.
Modafinil is also being used off-label to treat other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or attention deficit disorder (ADD), chronic fatigue syndrome, myotonic dystrophy and major depressive disorder.
However, over recent years Modafinil has continued to explode in popularity for a different reason - its recreational use. Modafinil is being taken by anyone ranging from students through to entrepreneurs, from the rich and famous (think Dave Asprey, Tim Ferriss or Joe Rogan) through to your everyday workers. You name the industry and there is no doubt that there are people within that space that are regularly relying on Modafinil to stay awake and help optimise their performance by enabling them to perform at their cognitive-best.
Here is a breakdown of some of the benefits that have been reported from the research, as well as healthy individuals that take Modafinil:
Increased alertness and deferred tiredness for 10 to 12 hours
This list grows longer as we continue to learn about Modafinil!
Considering just one drug has the chance of offering all these benefits it's no wonder that Modafinil has become one of the world's most popular Smart Drugs.
How does Modafinil work?
It is important to understand that Modafinil is structurally different from other central nervous system stimulants such as amphetamines, methylphenidate and cocaine.
Since stimulant drugs tend to share similar mechanisms of action you will find stimulants that are relatively mild like Modafinil often getting compared to stimulants that have significant potential for abuse (e.g. cocaine, heroin, Adderall). Some people try making parallels that the similar mechanisms of action therefore means similar likelihood of abuse, however this is not always true, which is the case here with Modafinil.
The precise mechanism by which Modafinil works is still not completely known. However, with decades of Modafinil being consumed by the general public, as well as the ongoing research, we're getting closer to understanding why and how Modafinil does what it does.
Modafinil is believed to affect several different neurotransmitters, including excitatory neurotransmitters like dopamine and glutamate (increasing their availability in the brain) and decreasing the availability of inhibitory neurotransmitters like gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Interestingly, it is understood that Modafinil binds to the same site on the Dopamine Transporter (DAT) as cocaine, but in a different way.
The history of Modafinil
Modafinil was originally created in France by neurophysiologist professor Michel Jouvet and Lafon Laboratories.
Modafinil emerged from the first of a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds developed in the 1970s, that also included Adrafinil.
Modafinil is the primary metabolite of Adrafinil but it doesn't have the polar -OH group on its terminal amide and has similar activity to the parent drug but is more commonly used.
Modafinil was first offered as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy in France in 1986. From 1994, Modafinil then went on to be prescribed to patients in France under the name of Modiodal.
In late 2002, the UK also approved the used to Modafinil.
In 1998, Modafinil was approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Narcolepsy. Later in 2003, Modafinil was approved for the treatment of Sleep Work Shift Disorder and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
It was sold over the counter in the United States by the American biopharmaceutical company Cephalon. They used to lease the manufacturing rights from Lafon Laboratories, but in 2001 they made the move to acquire the whole company, giving them the sole manufacturing rights.
Cephalon were able to maintain their monopoly right up until 2012 through a combination of patent protection and litigation legal cases following the expiry of the Modafinil patent in 2001. Soon after generic versions of Modafinil were readily available worldwide and at a much more affordable price.
What does Modafinil treat?
Modafinil is generally prescribed to treat medical conditions surrounding sleep, arousal and wakefulness.
Some of the conditions treated include the following:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Traumatic brain injury (Craniocerebral trauma)
Shift-Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)
The benefits of Modafinil
Modafinil has a number of advantages, which has made it one of the most popular nootropics regularly taken by people all around the globe.
The following list contains some of the advantages reported for taking Modafinil:
Improved alertness and wakefulness
Improved cognitive function
Improved ability to concentrate and focus
Reduced fatigue; and
Understanding the difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil
Modafinil is a racemic mixture (or racemate). What this means in chemistry is a racemic mixture has equal amounts of left- and right-handed enantiomers of a chiral molecule. A large number of chemicals exist in these two forms. The two enantiomers are chemically identical, and have the exact same structure. The only difference is that they are mirror images of each other.
A good analogy can be found with your hands. You have two hands, which are identical and structurally the same, however they are mirror opposites. One is left, and one is right.
Enantiomers are the “left and right” versions of a drug. These are labeled as the S- and R- enantiomers. Just as you have a dominant hand that is usually better at doing most tasks, there is also usually one enantiomer that is responsible for the majority of a drug’s effects. The other enantiomer can contribute to the effects, or in some cases may present adverse side effects.
In rare cases, the wrong enantiomer can be extremely harmful. Sometimes one enantiomer is completely useless. It just really depends on the racemic mixture.
Most racemic mixtures are equally balanced, meaning that the amount of the “left” enantiomer is equal to the amount of the “right” one. Modafinil is an equal combination of its S- and R- enantiomers.
Armodafinil is a "newer" drug that was introduced in 2007, whereas Modafinil was already on the market since the 1970s when it was discovered by the French neuroscientist Michel Jouvet. Armodafinil was marketed as the successor to Modafinil, and is purportedly more effective at lower doses.
Armodafinil is an enantiopure drug and is the active R- enantiomer of Modafinil. Enantiopure drugs are those that contain only one of the enantiomers available, R- or S-. What this means is that Modafinil already contains Armodafinil. However, Armodafinil does not contain Modafinil, it is only half of the racemic mixture in Modafinil.
The R- enantiomer is longer acting and is the one most responsible for the effects of Modafinil. Since the S- enantiomer is not as strong, Armodafinil’s dosage is therefore lower. Most standard doses of Armodafinil are 150 mg compared to Modafinil’s 200 mg. Armodafinil takes longer to reach its peak than Modafinil does. Some research has concluded that it could be up to 1.33x more potent with Armodafinil having a longer half-life than Modafinil, which means that it remains active in the body for a longer period of time.
The end there isn't a large difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil, and you are theoretically taking Armodafinil when you consume Modafinil.
What is the difference between the brand names and all the generic products?
Modafinil was originally discovered by the french family-owned French drug company Lafon Pharmaceuticals. The American pharmaceutical company Cephalon Pharmaceuticals (Cephalon) leased the manufacturing and selling rights of Modafinil from Lafon Laboratories, but in 2001 they acquired the whole company, giving Cephalon the sole manufacturing rights.
The brand name of Modafinil used to be Modiodal when it was owned by Lafon Pharmaceuticals, however, following the acquisition it became Cephalon's Provigil. Similarly, Cephalon had the patent for Armodafinil, which they would sell under the brand name Nuvigil.
So the two brand names are:
Once the patent for a drug expires any pharmaceutical company can decide that they want produce and sell it now. The drugs produced by these other manufacturers are generic versions. Since Modafinil and Armodafinil had become so popular and highly sought after, many companies began to produce their own generic versions.
Here is a list of some of the more popular generic brands that are offered for sale by the online vendors:
Generic medicines are made by following the recipe outlined in the original patent. Think of it like baking a cake. The original brand-name manufacturer made the first cake, and patented its ingredients and methods. Now that information is available to the public, and anyone can make the same cake. In the United States, the FDA regulates the generic medicine (or cake) market to ensure that the product you receive matches the original brand-name product. If the brand-name product created a “Chocolate Raspberry Layer Cake” then the generic version must also be the same exact flavour.
The FDA requires that all generic medicines contain 85-128% of the brand name’s active ingredient. This means that generic products may sometimes be a bit weaker than the original formula, or they could even be a little stronger. But in general they must fall within that range.
All generics, regardless of their brand, contain the same primary ingredient and roughly the same amount.
What are the side effects of Modafinil?
No medication or drug is ever perfect, and it wouldn't be right for us to educate you about Modafinil without covering some of the potential side effects.
Even NZT in the movie Limitless with Bradley Cooper had negative side effects, which he only discovered later on since it was very much still an experimental drug. There are always going to be downsides, but ideally you need to find products that have more positives than they do have negatives. Otherwise, what's the point...
Despite Modafinil not being completely understood, it has been well researched, and consumed by the general public for long enough, that we now have a pretty good idea of all the different symptoms and side effects that you might experience while taking it.
Let me bring your attention to the more common side effects, which affect less than 15% of users:
While these side effects are not very appealing, they don't happen to everyone and some of these can also be avoided by better understanding the medication, as well as your own body.
Modafinil has been shown to be effective and well tolerated when taken by healthy individuals.
